Jordan Mailata

The Philadelphia Eagles biggest developmental project over the last two years, offensive tackle Jordan Mailata has been stashed away in hiding as the coaching staff attempted to mold him into a future swing tackle option.

With COVID-19 taking away his opportunity to play in preseason games this year, Mailata’s stock as a serviceable offensive lineman in 2020 has definitely fallen. The Eagles added two new lineman in this year’s draft, and Mailata is now entering year three of his rookie contract. At some point, he may not be worth the roster spot anymore.

Mailata was put on the injured reserve list with an “injury” during each of the last two seasons, as the Eagles really just wanted him around for practice and developmental drills. An Australian rugby player leading into the 2018 draft, he had very minimal football-playing experience.

Following the departure of Halapoulivaati Vaitai this offseason, the Eagles are now in need of a legit “swing tackle” (backup lineman who can play both RT and LT). Obviously the Philly coaching staff would have loved if this was Mailata, but he likely isn’t even close to being ready to take on that role just yet.

With rookie Auburn linemen Jack Driscoll and Prince Tega-Wanogho now in the building, Mailata’s value to the team may have simply vanished this offseason.
