Philadelphia Flyers: Power outage in a 1-0 victory against the Canadiens
The Philadelphia Flyers squeak out a 1-0 victory in Game 3 to take a 2 games to 1 lead; no thanks to their PowerPlay.
Carter Hart was excellent and the Philadelphia Flyers power play was not. Those are the two huge takeaways from the Orange and Black 1-0 victory in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference Quarter-Finals series with the Montreal Canadiens.
The Flyers now find themselves ahead 2-1 in the series, which is encouraging because they really haven’t played their best hockey to this point. The power play especially has been one of the weak points so far this postseason.
To this point, the results are virtually non-existent. The power play unit has scored only one time out of 25 man advantage situations (4%); which ranks dead last out of all 24 playoff teams this summer. In this series with the Habs, the Flyers man advantage has converted 1-14 chances (7.1%).

The regular season was nothing to write home about for the unit as a whole, but they were good at times and ended up finishing right near the middle of the pack in power play percentage. Fourteenth overall is where the group landed, with a success rate of 20.8 percent.
The key for the Flyers is simple, they need to get their big guns going. Altogether, the team has combined to score only three goals so far in the first three games of this series. Claude Giroux, Travis Konecny, Sean Couturier, Kevin Hayes, and Jakub Voracek have combined for four total points in the series so far as well, which is concerning. Getting a few of these guys going could pay huge dividends. Heck, even if one of these guys can get hot it would make a world of difference.
The Canadiens on the other hand have converted on three of their ten chances on the man advantage. For a lot of this series, the Canadiens have seemingly controlled the pace of the game.
I guess the silver lining in all of this is the fact that the Philadelphia Flyers still find themselves with a 2-1 series lead. This time of year, there will be times where you need to grind out a win, and that’s exactly what the Flyers did in Game 3.
Now the focus shifts to trying to find a solution for the abysmal power play in time for Game 4. At some point, the Orange and Black will need to start putting some pucks in the back of the net.
The power outage has not significantly hindered the Philadelphia Flyers’ chances at this point, but if a solution is not found, it could ultimately be their downfall this postseason.
