Who will be the Philadelphia Eagles’ go-to backup running back?

Ever since Doug Pederson took over the Eagles, the team has become known for their multi-back system. They had LeGarrette Blount, Jay Ajayi, and Corey Clement in 2017, a handful of random backs in 2018, and of course Miles Sanders and Jordan Howard last year.

Even with Miles Sanders poised for a monster workload in his sophomore season, Doug Pederson would probably still prefer a solidified backup to mix things up at times.

Practice squad call-up Boston Scott took on that role in 2019, recording 85 touches, 499 yards, and five touchdowns through 11 games. He played a huge role for the Eagles down the stretch as well, including a three touchdown game against New York with the division on the line in week 17.

At only 25 years of age, Scott is likely first in line when it comes to securing the primary RB2 job on the team. His lightning quick speed and pass catching ability out of the backfield gives Pederson someone he can rely on to simulate the role Sanders usually plays, should the former Penn State back ever need a break/get injured.

However, three year veteran Corey Clement was re-signed this offseason. If the Super Bowl 52 hero is healthy and running the way he did back in ‘17, he could make a serious push for the backup job as well. He possesses a similar playing style to that of Scott and Sanders, primarily utilizing his speed and agility while also showcasing some above average hands.

There’s also zero guarantee the Eagles are actually done adding at the running back position. The team was reportedly interested in both Carlos Hyde and Devonta Freeman this offseason, and could look to bring in another veteran should Clement and Scott not impress early on. Late season practice squad call-up Elijah Holyfield Jr. could also make a sneaky push as a more traditional power-back.
