Philadelphia Eagles: Rob Riggle doinking on Cody Parkey feels trite

While it’s always fun to think back on the Philadelphia Eagles’ Wild Card win over the Chicago Bears, Rob Riggle kicking Cody Parkey when he’s down is lame.

At this point, you kind of have to feel bad for Cody Parkey.

After a promising start to his NFL career as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles from 2014-15, Parkey bounced around the league before becoming infamous for two of the least lucky bounces any kicker has had to suffer through: The double doink.

With the Chicago Bears‘ playoff hopes on the line, Parkey kicked a go-ahead field goal wide left and watched in horror as it bounced off the upright, and again off the crossbar before falling lifelessly to the ground.

But you, as an Eagles fan already know this; it’s old news at this point.

Well, apparently, no one told that to Fox Sports parody artist(?) Rob Riggle, as he gave Parkey the ‘Joker’ treatment on his most recent segment.

Dubbed ‘the Doinker’ Riggle scurries around Chicago as a deranged ex-kicker out to move past his infamous folly, and maybe take Jay Glazer’s job as a late-night television host? Honestly, the bit was kind of all over the place.

The video had it all: distorted footage of the Eagles’ best play of 2018, dancing, a ‘Firestorm’ reference, and throwback zubaz pants. However, kicking a kicker a day after he’s released is kind of in poor taste.

Sure, that play was horrible and may have forever damaged the 27-year-old’s psyche moving forward, but lest we forget that the Auburn University UDFA made the Pro-Bowl as a rookie and has received a number of opportunities to try out for teams despite costing the Bears a trip to New Orleans to face off against the white-hot Saints back in January.

As of Week 8, Parkey actually played fairly well for the Tennessee Titans over a three-game tenure: Hitting 83 percent of his extra-point attempts and all three of his field-goal attempts – including one from 51.

While those numbers aren’t amazing, and Parkey was only a member of the Titans because of an injury to Ryan Succop, he should be able to parlay his string of solid performances in Tennessee into a new contract in 2020, either in Nashville or (more likely) elsewhere.

To put it simply, solid kickers are always going to be in high demand – heck, even the Bears could use a player like Parkey, as their current kicker, Eddy Pineiro, missed two field goals in Week 8 against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Next. The Philadelphia Eagles have embraced the coverage linebacker. dark

Believe me, I get it, it takes a little while to put together any sort of film project – you have to write the script, get the props together, scout locations, hire a crew: it’s a whole thing – but poking fun at Cody Parkey a day after he was released at no fault of his own feels unfortunate, to say the least. Maybe Rob Riggle should stick to his bread and butter, self-deprecating humor, because even as a fan of the Philadelphia Eagles, his ‘Joker’ parody felt super trite.
