4. Gibson seems to have secured roster spot

With Alshon Jeffery continuing to recover from rotator cuff surgery along with the first four spots at receivers basically a lock, one of the interesting battles surrounding the Eagles roster was which players would emerge for the No. 5 spot. One week after making a strong case for a roster spot after hauling in a 63-yard touchdown against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Shelton Gibson came up big once again on Thursday when facing the Patriots.

Between his four-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter along with an impressive 57-yard catch in the second half, Gibson seems to be a clear favorite for that fifth spot at receiver, and it’s not even close. For a player facing pressure heading into 2018 after seeing limited action during his rookie campaign, Gibson has stepped up in a big way this preseason, and could easily turn into a surprise impact player this upcoming season.

Plus, one of the advantages of playing behind other receivers like Jeffery and Nelson Agholor is players like Gibson benefitting from seeing more passes thrown in their direction with defenders worrying about his teammates. Performing in the preseason is one thing, but the real question will come in a few weeks when the games matter the most during the regular season in September.
