76ers, Covington finalizing extension great news for both parties
By Dan Parzych
According to a recent report, the Philadelphia 76ers and Robert Covington are finalizing a four-year extension.
As the Philadelphia 76ers prepare for their Wednesday night battle against Lonzo Ball and the Los Angeles Lakers, it looks like one individual has plenty of extra reasons to be happy when it comes to his contract situation. Last week, reports surfaced that the Sixers were hoping to lock Robert Covington up for a few more years when he was eligible on Wednesday, and it turns out, the deal seems to be pretty close to happening.

Just hours before the highly anticipated game between the Sixers and Lakers, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported how Covington and the organization are in the process of finalizing a four-year extension that would be worth $62 million. As Wojnarowski pointed out, part of the deal for Covington would include a $15 million renegotiation bump for this season (his salary for 2017-18 is $1.57 million), and when looking at the type of impact he’s made over the years, the former Tennessee State standout is worth every penny.
Between his recent clutch three-point shot that sealed the deal for Philadelphia on Monday night against the Los Angeles Clippers to his performance against the Sacramento Kings last week in which he converted 6 of 12 shots from three-point change, Sixers fans understand just how valuable Covington has been to this team this year. And without Covington, there’s a good chance Philadelphia wouldn’t be in this current position of being an actual contender in the Eastern Conference, which feels like the first time in forever after all of those years of rebuilding.

Speaking of the last couple of seasons, Covington also deserves plenty of credit for the way he’s handled everything over the years with all of the losing since most players would have been frustrated to a point that resulted in leaving for another team. But at the end of the day, Covington’s patience and unselfishness seems to have finally paid off with this extension coming into play. Between Covington’s new deal along with Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid quickly becoming two of the league’s top stars, the Sixers are an exciting team to follow for a change, as this team is just getting started when it comes to what the future holds after years of “Trusting The Process.”
