Embiid setting career high 36 minutes against Clippers positive sign for 76ers
By Dan Parzych
Joel Embiid came up big for the Philadelphia 76ers during the team’s recent win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday.
After losing two tough games in a row to the Sacramento Kings and Golden State Warriors, the Philadelphia 76ers were hoping to get back on the winning track Monday night against the Los Angeles Clippers to get their record back above the .500 mark. Not only did Robert Covington come up big to help make that happen for the Sixers by scoring 31 points, but also it was Joel Embiid that ended up being a major difference maker in the team’s 109-105 victory over the Clippers.

Dominating doesn’t even begin to describe the type of performance put together by Embiid after finishing the contest against Los Angeles with 32 points to go along with 16 rebounds, but that wasn’t even the most impressive statistic on the center’s end. Believe it or not, the former Kansas standout ended up playing 36 minutes in the game, which is huge for someone on a “minutes restriction” like Embiid.
Over the last week or two, there have been concerns over the type of shape Embiid was in after dealing with knee soreness, so to see him put together a strong performance against the Clippers was a positive sign for the Sixers. Between Embiid and Ben Simmons getting better with experience along with Covington continuing to prove his value as a role player, Philadelphia seems to finally becoming a threat in the Eastern Conference, although they still have a long way to go.
Next: Extension coming soon for Covington?
Rewarding Embiid with a hefty extension (five-year, $148 million) back in October was a huge risk for the Sixers, but this was simply a risk they certainly had to take. Even if there are random games in which doctors prefer him to rest, Monday’s game is just another example of why Embiid is slowly working his way to becoming one of top centers in the NBA, and the scary thing is he’s just getting started in what should be an amazing career.
