Simmonds comes up big once again for Flyers against Oilers with game winner
By Dan Parzych
Thanks to a go-ahead goal by Wayne Simmonds in the final minutes, the Philadelphia Flyers picked up their fifth win of the 2017-18 season on Saturday.
After playing their first four games on the road to kickoff the 2017-18 season, the Philadelphia Flyers have certainly enjoyed the start of their five-game homestand, which will conclude on Tuesday against the Anaheim Ducks. But until then, the Flyers are going to enjoy their latest victory over the Edmonton Oilers, and once again, it was Wayne Simmonds who came through when his team needed him the most.

With just over two minutes remaining of a 1-1 game, Simmonds scored the game-winning goal on a pass from Valtteri Filppula to give Philadelphia what ended up being the game-winning goal against Edmonton. For Simmonds, this marked the sixth time in eight games so far the Flyers star ended up on the scoring end, as hopefully this is just the beginning of what’s in store throughout the 2017-18 campaign.
Simmonds wasted no time starting off the year on a hot note by recording a hat trick against the San Jose Sharks on opening night, and believe it or not, he’s recorded at least a goal or assist in each of Philadelphia’s five wins. And when seeing that Simmonds failed to record either in each of the three losses, it shows how much of a difference maker the Flyers winger can be when it comes to the outcome of games.

With that being said, Philadelphia still has plenty of work ahead of them when it comes to keeping up with the Pittsburgh Penguins and New Jersey Devils in the division race, but at least they’re keeping pace for now. Not only would a win over the Ducks on Tuesday help keep up in the division, but also would be the perfect way to end their five-game homestand since the Flyers could go 4-1 in that span with another win.
