Would Chip Hale be a good fit for the Philadelphia Phillies as their new manager for the 2018 season?

Ever since the Philadelphia Phillies made the decision to move on from Pete Mackanin at manager, there have been plenty of names thrown around when it comes to who could take over the new role for the team during the 2017-18 season. As for the latest candidate, it appears the Phillies have expressed interest in former Arizona Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale, which could be a good fit for both parties.

In fact, Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports recently reported that Philadelphia has already interviewed Hale, who is currently a member of the Oakland Athletics as their third-base coach, for the position. Here’s what Heyman had to say about Hale with the Phillies via FanRag Sports:

"The Phillies have tried to keep everything quiet, but a few names have leaked out. Here’s a new one: Chip Hale, the former Diamondbacks manager and current A’s coach, went for an interview. Other names that have surfaced include Indians pitching coach Mickey Callaway, Phillies special assistant Jorge Velandia, Phillies minor-league manager Dusty Wathan, and Red Sox bench coach Gary DiSarcina. Brad Ausmus is another who’s thought to be on their list, but it’s hard to tell with the Phillies. Hale did a terrific job his first year with the D-backs, and one NL GM remarked, “I don’t understand why he wouldn’t be a candidate everywhere.” Hale was the runner-up when the Mets hired Terry Collins, and while the Mets showed initial interest, it isn’t certain whether he remains on their list."

Before taking over the role as third-base coach with the A’s, Hale spent two seasons as manager for the Diamondbacks, but obviously wasn’t as successful after the team parted ways with him after last season. With that being said, Hale has received plenty of praise over the years for his ability as a head coach, and when looking at all of the talent he would have to work with as a potential manager for the Phillies, it’s easy to understand why the organization is considering the move.

Philadelphia has an unfortunate streak of finishing below .500 in each of the last five seasons, but with young stars like Rhys Hoskins giving this young team hope for the future, this could be a dream job for potential managers. As mentioned before, there have been numerous names thrown into the mix of potential new managers for the Phillies next season, and it will be interesting to see over the next few days just how serious the team is about the possibility of Hale.
