There is a lot of talk about the new superstars on the Philadelphia 76ers, with Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons, and Markelle Fultz leading the team. However, one player not talked about much, but should have a big effect on the season’s outcome, is Robert Covington.

The Philadelphia 76ers were in action last night against the Washington Wizards for the first time this season, and everyone seemed to impress in some aspect of the game. However, the one player that stood out the most, but was talked about the least, was small forward Robert Covington. He doesn’t blow anyone away with athleticism, but Covington knows his role on this team and he fills it well, which is the reason why he will end up being the unsung hero of the Sixers this year.

More from Section 215

In a tough loss to the Wizards, Covington scored 29 points while grabbing seven rebounds, showing off his range by going 7 of 11 from three-point range. Often overshadowed by bigger stars like Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid, Covington knows what he is to this team and doesn’t bother trying to be something he’s not. He is a defensive stopper who is lethal from downtown, something the team desperately needs to space out the floor.

In years past, Philadelphia has always played with a lot of length on the court at any given moment, but now with the influx of shooting from Covington playing a larger role along with the signing of J.J. Redick, the team has a new identity on offense. Proven by his 29 points against the Wizards, Covington can fill up a stat sheet while not being considered the superstar. A secondary role on an up-and-coming team is an incredibly important role to fill, as these types of players need to step up so not all of the pressure falls on the young stars of the team.

For all of his upside, Covington still has his pitfalls. Prone to taking unnecessary shots and forcing passes that are turned over are some things he needs to work on in order to become a focal point of the offense.

Philadelphia is a growing force in the Eastern Conference, and even with the loss sustained by Washington, the team proved they are quickly improving. Luckily, Covington was one of the many bright spots against the Wizards, something that he will prove to be for the rest of this season.
