Used as Carson Wentz’s security blanket, Ertz already has half of the amount of targets he had in the 14 games he played in last season. Right now, defenses have not been able to guard Ertz, as he is incredibly quick for a tight end so he can get past a linebacker, yet is also big enough to use his body to beat a cornerback. On pace for 90 receptions for 1,080 yards and 10 touchdowns, Ertz would shatter his previous career highs, which is exactly what the Eagles hoped for when they drafted the tight end out of Stanford.
The big difference in this year from years past is that Philadelhpia finally realizes Ertz is a huge red-zone threat. Ertz’s career high for touchdowns entering this season was four, and in only six games this year, he has already matched that total. With so many other weapons on offense, Ertz isn’t facing off against the opponents best defender, leaving him able to beat his coverage in the red zone often this year.
Tight ends usually take a few years to develop in the NFL, and while Ertz took a little longer than normal, he looks the part of a top tight end in the league. Wentz is only in his second season, and yet he has created a great rapport with his big tight end, and if that connection can keep growing, then the sky is the limit.

Ertz has the potential to be a top receiving option in the NFL, regardless of position. His game play leaves him in mismatches throughout the game that allow him to make big gains, exactly what the Eagles need to have success on offense. Wentz has shown tons of potential this season, and with Ertz becoming a top tight end in the league, the Eagles offense could be in great shape for years to come.
