With the NFL preseason coming to an end, the Philadelphia Eagles kept two quarterbacks for the 2017- 2018 regular season.

Obviously, franchise quarterbacks are hard to come by. Now, the Philadelphia Eagles don’t have to worry about their quarterback position anymore. After years of mixing and matching different guys for the job, they finally stuck with one qualified candidate. Then, the Birds drafted Carson Wentz in the 2016 NFL Draft.

More from Section 215

We all have faith that Wentz can lead the Philadelphia Eagles to the playoffs. He’s shown signs of having success, even with mediocre weapons around him. Adding players like Alshon Jeffery and Torrie Smith to the mix will only improve his passing ability. Thankfully, we won’t have to worry as much about Wentz this year.

With that said, you never know with the NFL. Anything can happen. If Carson Wentz goes down, can the Eagles still compete?

Filling Wentz’s Wagon

That’s where the backup quarterback battle comes in. The matchup essentially went between Matt McGloin and Dane Evans. McGloin ended up finishing the preseason with one touchdown pass and three interceptions on a 69.7 pass percentage. Evans threw the same touchdown to interception ratio at a 53.5 percent clip. Given the fact that these were the only two quarterbacks not named Wentz that were playing, you’d expect one of them to win the job.

Well, as it turns out, neither won.

As a result, where does that leave the Philadelphia Eagles? Well, I guess that leaves the last quarterback on the roster: Nick Foles. Fans didn’t get to see Foles at all this preseason due to his elbow issues. He took zero snaps, while McGloin and Evans carried the load against third and fourth string defenses. However, he did end up winning the backup job, which goes to show how bad the other guys must’ve been.

Anyway, this tells us two things. First, the Eagles front office feels strongly that they won’t need to rely on Foles. Second, McGloin and Evans lack the talent to beat out an injured backup. Obviously, that’s not much, and we all probably knew that before the preseason even started. Regardless, that’s where we are now, and hopefully, the Philadelphia Eagles won’t have to put any faith in Foles. Ideally, Wentz’s stock continues to rise, because the Birds can’t afford for it not to.
