The Philadelphia Flyers knew they would get one of two great prospects. With their first pick in the NHL draft they selected Nolan Patrick.

The former standout for the Brandon Wheat Kings brings a physical, two way game to the NHL. Patrick is praised for his hockey acumen and his ability to always make the right play. Despite only playing 33 games last season, Patrick still notched 46 points (20 goals, 26 assists) in 33 games.

Patrick was labeled a high level prospect after his 2015-2016 season where he had 102 points, 41 goals 61 assists. He would have been drafted high last season had he been eligible.

My favorite part of Patrick’s game is his team first mentality. He plays the game and carries himself in a way that is unusual for a 18 year old. He is more mature than the average 18 year old, he has future captain written all over him.

To give you a better idea of who the newest Flyer is, here is a quote from Bleacher Report’s Adrian Dater:

"“Many see a chance for Nolan Patrick to become another Ryan Getzlaf of the Anaheim Ducks. Like Getzlaf, Patrick is a big center, at 6’2″, 198, with room to fill out more. Patrick’s leadership qualities compare favorably to those of the Ducks captain. Patrick’s hockey sense is highly prized by scouts, and he has honed his craft in the rugged WHL, as did Getzlaf.”"

The Philadelphia Flyers hit an absolute homerun by landing Nolan Patrick. He should see time in the NHL next season, especially in the absence of Pierre-Edouard Bellemare. I’m looking forward to seeing how he performs at the next level. He should put some size on in the off season, but I think he will be an effective player for the Flyers. He has the proper mindset and tools to be successful.

Never have I ever been happier for one of my favorite teams to miss the playoffs. With the addition of Nolan Patrick I expect the Flyers to be back in the mix for a playoff spot next season, he will add another layer of depth to the roster and should be a future leader of the team.
