With the eighty-third selection in the 2017 MLB First-Year Player Draft, the Philadelphia Phillies select Connor Seabold, a right-handed pitcher from Cal State Fullerton Athletics.

With day one of the MLB Draft in the books, Phillies GM Matt Klentak and the scouting department will continue to build a strong farm system with the rest of their picks. In the first round the Phillies selected Adam Haseley, an Outfielder with plus speed from the University of Virgina and in the second round, the Phillies selected Spencer Howard, a hard-throwing right-handed pitcher from Cal Poly Tech.

In the third round, Phillies brass decided to select Connor Seabold, a right-handed pitcher from Cal State Fullerton. The 6’3″, 185 pound Seabold was originally drafted out of high school by the Baltimore Orioles in the 19th round (571st Overall) in the 2014 First-Year player draft.

Ranked 188 on the MLB Top 200 list, Seabold rose late in the draft process as his fast ball got up to 92-94MPH and maintained his velocity throughout a complete-game victory against Long Beach State. Sebold’s most impressive skill is his plus control, which has been said may be the best among pitchers in this 2017 class.

According to the MLB.com scouting report his control was ranked a 65 on the, scouting 80 scale. Seabold also boasts a solid change-up and a usable, sometimes shaky, breaking ball.  As a sophomore, Connor Seabold ranked second in the nation in strikeout-to-walk ratio after allowing just nine walks on the season. Connor allowed two or more earned runs only three times in his 16 appearances.

After selecting Spencer Howard in the second round, this is the second college arm the Phillies have selected in there first 3 selections. Early on it looks like the Phillies are stocking up on college arms with the thought of saving some money for Prep pitchers later in the draft.

As the draft continues it gets harder to project these kids on how they may perform in the future, but, it’s never a bad idea to load up on pitchers to build the farm system moving forward.

The city of Philadelphia and Phillies fans welcome Connor Seabold to the fold.
