The Philadelphia Eagles will be without Beau Allen for the foreseeable future due to an upper body injury.

So that Timmy Jernigan trade looks even better now, huh? The successes of the recent acquisition will prove to be more vital to the Philadelphia Eagles September success now that Beau Allen is sidelined with, what the hockey world would vaguely call, an upper body injury. While the specifics are not yet known, it sounds as though Allen tore his pectoralis major muscle.

The injury seems to involve the primary muscle in the chest and is essential in the movement of the shoulder: specifically in rotation of the shoulder and flexing of the upper arm. Not unimportant functions for a defensive lineman.

It is believed Allen would require surgery for repair of the injury. Depending on the severity of the injury, a reasonable prognosis would be in the 4-6 month range with nearly full recovery of strength & mobility over time. Should this be the case, quite conservatively, it is likely Allen will miss less than half the season.

More from Philadelphia Eagles

While it is inarguable that Jernigan would have been the starter alongside Fletcher Cox, Allen would have surely been a key contributor to Jim Schwartz’ front four. He has been a largely underrated run-stuffer who, last season, flashed potential as a pass rusher while manning the starting role for an injured Bennie Logan.

With Allen’s injury, Jernigan will have to be tossed into the fire much earlier than expected. Prior, he would have an easing in period to adjust to the different schemes and responsibilities of the Philadelphia Eagles but that won’t be the case anymore.

Certainly, no reasonable evaluator would argue Allen has the capacity to be an All-Pro. However, his skills and work ethic have seen him outplay expectations for a seventh-round draft pick. He is, inarguably, the kind of worker you want in the locker room and his on-field play earned him increases snaps. As a result, Allen–as recently as several weeks ago–was rumored to have been considered for a contract extension. Allen will be an unrestricted free agent after this season and the team seemingly views him as a valued contributor moving forward.

Next: The Philadelphia Eagles should NOT draft a RB this year

It will be interesting to see what the Philadelphia Eagles eventually do as both Allen and Jernigan will be unrestricted free agents at the end of the season but the decisions will not be easy. Upper body injuries can linger causing reinjury to the same area and Jernigan enters the defense as a relative unknown. One thing is for sure though, Jernigan will be an important piece to the Philadelphia Eagles success in 2017.
