Philadelphia Eagles: Fantasy Football Week 5 Start Or Sit
The Philadelphia Eagles square off against the Detroit Lions after their bye week in Week 5. Here’s who to start and who to sit in fantasy.
Ah! Eagles football is back. After the bye week the Philadelphia Eagles will try to continue their surprising run against Matthew Stafford and the Detroit Lions. The Lions come into the game at 1-3 with constant inconsistence performance.
The Lions defense has been struggling this season. They gave up 92 points in four games, and only gave up under 20 points to two sluggish offenses in the Tennessee Titans and the Chicago Bears. With Carson Wentz coming in with no turnovers and the defense being the only one in the league to give up no passing touchdowns, the Philadelphia Eagles should handle this game easily.
With that being said, there will be some implications fantasy football wise. As always, we will be going by ESPN’s H2H standard scoring.

Who To Start:
Carson Wentz
Yeah, there’s not much to say at this point on why you should start Carson Wentz. Wentz has been the key to the Philadelphia Eagles’ success, and that will show once again against a weak Lions secondary. Expect a lot of touchdowns. And a lot of yards. The Wentz Wagon will continue to roll.
ESPN Projected: 17 points
Section 215 Prediction: 23 points
Jordan Matthews
If Wentz is Batman, Matthews is Robin. The passing attack will be able impact the game more than ever this week. Matthews’ chemistry with Wentz have turned him from a question mark to a solid wide receiver option. I’d expect Matthews to near the 100-yard mark, with at least one touchdown.
ESPN Projected: 15 points
Section 215 Prediction: 15 points
Eagles D/ST
The Philadelphia Eagles have been blessed with an outstanding defensive unit this season. The weak secondary has outplayed the expectations and became an anchor for this defense. With Matt Stafford’s ability to rack up passing yards, playing the Eagles’ defense may seem questionable, but the potential for high turnover amounts is too high to pass up on. I’d expect the Philadelphia Eagles to bend at times, but not break. They’ll hold the Lions in single digits while coming up with two turnovers.
ESPN Projected: 7 points
Section 215 Prediction: 13 points
Zach Ertz
Despite this being Ertz first game since sitting out with a rib injury, expect him to be a main option in the passing game. Ertz as a red zone threat allows fantasy owners to throw him in and bank on at least one touchdown. The tight end should rack up 50 to 60 yards with one touchdown.
ESPN Projected: 12 points
Section 215 Prediction: 11 points
Others to start:
Who To Sit:
Ryan Mathews
Don’t panic, fantasy owners. Mathews will be back to his consistent ways, just not this week. Still recovering from injury, Mathews will likely see limited touches. Combine that with the emphasis of the passing attack and the explosiveness of Darren Sproles, Mathews should be an easy sit for this week.
ESPN Projected: 7 points
Section 215 Prediction: 5 points
Dorial Green-Beckham
DGB hasn’t gotten off to a great start with the Philadelphia Eagles. He has had minimal opportunities, and I’d expect that to continue this week. He may breakout for 30-40 yards, but that’s his ceiling as of now.
ESPN Projected: 5 points
Section 215 Prediction: 4 points
Josh Huff
Like DGB, Huff hasn’t lived up to the fan hype. In fact, I’d be more confident starting DGB than Huff at this point.
ESPN Projected: 3 points
Section 215 Prediction: 2 points

The Philadelphia Eagles’ core offensive players will continue to prove as top fantasy options this week. The defense will also hold their own. This should be a fun week for the Philadelphia Eagles fans, but the Lions always have that high scoring potential. It’ll be interesting to see how both secondaries perform in this Week 5 matchup.
