Philadelphia Union: Are the Union Playoff bound?
AWAY vs New York Red Bulls 7 p.m. October 1st
“WE ALL HATE RED BULLS!” The Son’s of Ben can be heard chanting when the two sides play. The Philadelphia Union will travel to Harrison, New Jersey to take on hated Rival New York Red Bulls.
Anytime these two team’s play you can expect fireworks to fly. In the preseason, newly signed Brazilian, Ilsinho was ejected from the game against the Red Bulls. The game was a chippy one, Ilsinho received a yellow card in the 29th minute then a red card coming in the 44th minute.
In the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal matchup earlier this year, during the closing minutes, Red Bulls coach Jesse Marsch was ejected. Before he made his way off the field he made sure to make a spectacle of himself. Marsch would launch two balls towards the Union bench in frustration. The Union would win 2-1.
Similar to the preseason game against the Red Bulls, Ilsinho would again be ejected. The two clubs met for the first time in MLS season play and Ilsinho would receive his second yellow of the match after an elbow caught the head of a Red Bulls player. The elbow didn’t look intentional, but it was enough to see the Brazilian sent off.
Game Expectations
This will be the Union’s last away game of the regular season, as they make the short trip down I-295. It will also be the first game of two to come against the Red Bulls, in the last three weeks of the season. With the Red Bulls in 4th place right behind the Union, this game is extremely important to gain some distance. Philadelphia Union earn their fifth away win of the season, finishing 5-7-5, in dominating fashion, 3-1.
