Philadelphia Phillies: The Worst Offense in Baseball

The Philadelphia Phillies are currently 6-24 in their last 30 games. This is due to any number of reasons you can think of, but the one factor behind their results in the last month is their disgusting offense.

According to MLB.com, other than Odubel Herrera, there are currently, count ’em, ZERO players batting above .250 this season. The next closest to him is Cesar Hernandez who’s putting up a .248 average. The drop off from that point is equally as disturbing with the player having the fourth best average being Freddy Galvis at .210. For those that want to state that it could be worse, you’re wrong. With a team batting average of .225, the Philadelphia Phillies are dead last as a team in that statistic. Nine points behind the next closest team (Mets/Dodgers).

The Philadelphia Phillies also have the worst on-base percentage in the league this season. Yes, this takes into account your batting average, but the Phils don’t close the gap any in this regard. As a team, their OBP currently sits at .278, almost 20 points behind the Padres for second worst in the MLB(.296). Once again Herrera remains the outlier with a .398 OBP. But after him, everyone else is at best on par with the team average.

Not that hitting the long ball is necessarily a key component to success in the MLB, but you certainly want to be able to break it out at times. If it weren’t for the Braves, Marlins, and Giants the Philadelphia Phillies would also be bottom dwellers in this department as well. Currently with 60 homers on the campaign, they’re just one above the Giants and two above the Marlins. So don’t be shocked if they’re second to only the Braves in a few days time.

Whenever a team has a run differential of -103, good enough for third worst in baseball, you usually don’t thrive in the runs batted in and the runs department. Believe it or not, the Philadelphia Phillies are the most pathetic team in the Majors in both categories. With 208 RBI’s (seven behind the Braves, the next closest team) and 221 runs (11 behind the Braves for worst), this team has shown that they are, to quote Dennis Green formerly of the Arizona Cardinals, “exactly who we thought they were.”

More from Philadelphia Phillies

With how bad the overall offensive approach has been for the Philadelphia Phillies this season, manager Pete Mackanin has been forced to be more aggressive on the base paths. While they’re 17th in the MLB in steals, not close to last, they have been caught stealing 23 times this year to currently sit one behind the Reds and Brewers for most in the league. You can’t blame Pete for trying to make things happen, but even when they try, they fail almost as much as anyone.

Needless to say, this is painful baseball we’re witnessing before our eyes. As a die hard fan, I’m praying that the front office does something, and soon. I can’t see Ryan Howard being unable to hit a fastball anymore. I’m sick of hearing how Cody Asche can be a good hitter or how the athleticism of Freddy Galvis and Cesar Hernandez is top notch in the field. Ryan Howard is batting .145. THAT’S REPULSIVE! Cody Asche is boasting a whopping .226 average. These players are not meant to be everyday players. They don’t belong on the team.

As it sits, it’s apparent that the Philadelphia Phillies have the worst offense in the league, it’s time to try something else other than the scrubs that suit up in red pinstripes currently. You could say it could get worse, but you’d be wrong again, we’re already the worst, so why not try something different? Anything at all, because it hurts to watch this team right now.
