Philadelphia Phillies: Day 2 MLB Draft Results
The Philadelphia Phillies may have made waves in Day 1 of the draft by taking Mickey Moniak and Kevin Gowdy, but their Day 2 moves will prove to be important as well.
Day 2 of the MLB Draft may not have as much intrigue as the first day, but the Philadelphia Phillies made some intriguing moves that could end up being impactful in the long run.
Mickey Moniak and Kevin Gowdy will take the headlines, but the way the Philadelphia Phillies draft Day 2 is where scouts make their money. With a lot of picks tending to choose collegiate baseball over signing right away, it is important to take a prospect’s situation into account more than the first day.
3rd Round- Cole Stobbe, SS, Millard West HS (Nebraska)
The Philadelphia Phillies started off the second day of the draft by selecting shortstop Cole Stobbe. Stobbe was the Nebraska Player Of The Year for high school ball. Stobbe’s defensive range is very polished for a young prospect, and was looked at as a steal taken in the 3rd round. Stobbe has some nice pop from the right side of the plate, but will need to translate more power in professional ball.

4th Round- JoJo Romero, LHP, Yavapai College
JoJo Romero became the second pitcher to be selected by the Philadelphia Phillies. The lefty is hard-throwing fastball pitcher that throws an arsenal of pitches. Romero will most likely become a reliever unless he can up his stamina.
5th Round- Cole Irvin, LHP, Oregon
Back to back lefty’s for the Philadelphia Phillies in this one. Cole Irvin had a dynamite 2013 season for the Oregon Ducks, pitching to the tune of a 2.48 ERA with a 12-3 record and 4 complete games. Irvin then underwent Tommy John surgery the following season, costing him his sophomore year. Irvin never really was able to fully bounce back to his 2013 type dominance, but it was a nice risk to take in the 5th round.
6th Round- David Martinelli, CF, Dallas Baptist
Martinelli had batted .280 over his three seasons for Dallas Baptist. Contact is the name of the game for the 20-year old, as his power and speed are solid but do not standout. Martinelli can develop into a decent overall player, but he is a project.

7th Round- Henri Lartigue, C, Mississippi
Lartigue exploded in his first season as an everyday catcher. In 207 AB, Lartigue batted .353 and drove in 31 RBI. Defensively, Lartigue has a nice foundation but his abilities can still be refined.
8th Round- Grant Dyer, RHP, UCLA
Grant Dyer is coming off a tough year where he finished 4-4 with a 4.50 ERA, making only 13 starts. Dyer does exemplify Philadelphia Phillies toughness however, he recovered from a brutal hit to the face by a ball while running out a ground ball in high school that shattered numerous bones.
9th Round- Blake Quinn, RHP, Cal State Fullerton
Quinn had 17 appearances with a 2.17 ERA. Quinn’s ceiling is a key reliever in the middle innings.
10th Round- Julian Garcia, RHP, Metro St College
Garcia is a high energy pitcher, which could help him find his way to the majors.
Garcia could be one of those surprise prospects from a small school.
