Eagles News: Kiko Alonso to Have MRI Monday

facebooktwitterreddit

The Philadelphia Eagles need a break Monday.

Somewhat lost in the raging dumpster fire that was the Philadelphia Eagles 20-10 loss to the Dallas Cowboys this afternoon was linebacker Kiko Alonso exiting the game in the second quarter.

Alsono did not start the game, which normally wouldn’t be that alarming considering the Eagles also have Mychal Kendricks and DeMeco Ryans. However, with how poorly Ryans played early on, it seemed especially strange that Alonso, perhaps the most talented player on the team, wasn’t on the field much in the first quarter.

When he left in the second quarter, I wondered if he was having a re-occurrence of the knee tendonitis that kept him out of the first three games of the pre-season. Technically you could play through tendonitis in some cases, though it’s hard to expect someone to do so if you don’t know exactly how badly they feel.

As the game went on, there were whispers of Alonso having re-torn his ACL, though none came from anyone credible enough to give the whispers real substance.

While it doesn’t appear to have been ruled out, Alonso will have an MRI tomorrow on his left knee (the one that was torn), meaning no one really knows with any certainty what caused him to leave the game today.

Alonso was of course acquired for LeSean McCoy this past off-season. The Oregon product has the talent to be an elite inside linebacker, shown by the 150 plus tackles and four picks he had in his rookie season of 2013, though has had injury problems dating back to college. Considering he missed the entire season last year with a torn ACL, it’s hard to not feel at least some level of concern over this.

However, it does appear that internet rumors of his demise were at the very least premature. At this time tomorrow, we should have a much clearer understanding of Alonso’s future.

UPDATE: 11:32 p.m.

Though its just speculation at this point, various sources have weighed in on the potential severity of Kiko Alonso’s injury suffered in Sunday’s loss to the Cowboys.

Eliot Shorr-Parks’ article, specifically the section that discusses whether or not Alonso’s injury is a re-occurrence of the one that sidelined him for all of 2014, reads as such:

"Two separate sources close to Alonso also said that the inside linebacker is optimistic the injury is not serious.Given the fact Alonso has suffered a torn ACL in the past, it is fair to think he would know right away had he torn it again. The MRI, and not a growing sense of optimism, however, will ultimately give the answer on just how injured Alonso is."

Shorr-Parks was not the only reporter to provide potential insight on Alonso’s immediate status.

UPDATE: 9/21 5:56 p.m.

This is all that’s been said of Alonso’s status today. He was scheduled to have an MRI earlier this afternoon.

UPDATE: 9/21 7:20 p.m.

For all of the positivity  last night, this is not good news on Kiko.
