Twice, the Philadelphia Eagles have brought in safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, and each season has ended in a Super Bowl appearance. After his first tenure in Philly, the safety left to join the Detroit Lions and Dan Campbell's physical defense. It seemed a fitting move for a fiery player who isn't going to hesitate to mix things up.
Whether this is with his own teammates or during a game, Gardner-Johnson isn't changing his intensity level or the emotion he brings to any roster. This is a blessing and a curse that provides a lot of highlights, and at times, a high level of frustration.
Perhaps this is a piece of why the Eagles were so willing to move on from the veteran despite the positive results. Gardner-Johnson isn't changing. The one thing you can do is find the right culture fit or follow exactly the path the Eagles have. Philly brought the safety in for two short tenures when another answer was lacking. Now that there is a level of depth in the secondary, the team pulled the trigger on a move that sent the physical defender to the Houston Texans.
Almost a mini fight broke out.

CGJ drove Cade Stover to the ground off a dump off pass. Stover was not happy about that.
Former Eagles Defender C.J. Gardner-Johnson Causes Camp Dustup
Gardner-Johnson has wasted little time enforcing his reputation with his new team already making waves late in the offseason and early in camp. The latest example of this was guarding Cade Stover, who ended the rep on the ground. The pass-catcher made it clear that this wasn't appreciated, and a fight almost ensued. This is a piece of what you're signing up for anytime you bring Gardner-Johnson on your roster.
What makes the safety so great also works against his value. It is impossible to have one without the other. There are now years of sample size telling us who the veteran defender is and what the production is going to be. Tolerance vs. production is a line the veteran believes in carefully walking, and this isn't going to change in Houston.
One could argue this is the exact fit the veteran needed, with the Texans needing a bit of an edge and attitude to have a chance to contend in a loaded AFC. Philly had plenty of intensity and swagger without the veteran safety on the roster, allowing for the move.
