Philadelphia Eagles fans aren't going to be surprised by the fact that former Eagle C.J. Gardner-Johnson hasn't shown up for OTAs. It is yet another headline that the fiery defensive back can't help but generate every stop of his career. Two seasons spent in Philly were a great example of this fact and, in truth, were pivotal to the Eagles finally turning the corner and winning the 2024 Super Bowl. Still, trading the defender to the Houston Texans made a level of sense.

If the Eagles have any hope of starting a dynasty, it is going to take the perfect mix of retaining franchise players and bringing in fresh faces. Learning from the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs, the team must have a core while also being unafraid to part ways with starters. Trading Gardner-Johnson to the Texans falls perfectly into this strategy. The safety failing to show up for OTAs is also an early indication that the franchise made the right decision.

Former Eagles Safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson is Already Making Headlines in Houston

With that said, it is important to note that the reasons behind players failing to be present for practice aren't always clear. Grace is needed, understanding that not every player failing to show up is due to in-house drama. Whether it is rehabbing an injury or a personal matter, there are a myriad of reasons why the safety might have missed the start of OTAs.

However, it cannot be ruled out that this is due to a contract dispute. Understanding the fiery nature of the defender, it is in the playbook to hold out despite having two years remaining on his deal. It is an interesting situation, Philly will be keeping a close eye on, having made the difficult decision to part ways with a pivotal piece of its Super Bowl winning team.

For Gardner-Johnson, this is the fourth stop of the veteran's career, having previously spent time with the New Orleans Saints, Detroit Lions, and Philadelphia Eagles. Houston added the veteran presence, hoping it will help provide a needed defensive edge. One that can help support C.J. Stroud and aid the Houston roster in taking the next step in the 2025 playoffs. While this is a great potential fit, there is no denying things are off to a rocky start.
