The Philadelphia Eagles will look to fill several needs when free agency begins next week, but one of the biggest needs is help at cornerback. The Eagles struggled to find an outside cornerback last season, with Kelee Ringo and Adoree’ Jackson struggling to fill the spot alongside Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean. After sinking additional resources in a midseason trade for Michael Carter II, the Eagles still couldn’t figure it out, leaving them to go shopping for a solution in free agency.
This year’s crop hasn’t had much hype as Chicago Bears corner Nahshon Wright is the top player in the market, one year after struggling to find playing time with the Minnesota Vikings. With plenty of buyer beware, the Eagles may have to keep their eyes open for under-the-radar options, including Los Angeles Rams cornerback Roger McCreary.
McCreary is a free agent, but it appears his time in Los Angeles is coming to an end. The Rams acquired Trent McDuffie in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs on Wednesday, and the move may shove McCreary out the door and push him straight to Philadelphia when free agency begins.
Roger McCreary Could Be Next Eagles CB2 Target in Free Agency
The 2025 season was not an ideal one for McCreary. After starting the season with the Tennessee Titans, he was traded to the Rams ahead of the midseason trade deadline. While he found himself with an NFC contender, he suffered hip and groin injuries on his first defensive snap with the Rams and had issues carving out a meaningful role after he returned with 38 defensive snaps and 86 special teams snaps in the last two games, according to Pro Football Focus.
McCreary also only played four snaps in a Wild Card victory over the Carolina Panthers, but his playing time increased in the Rams’ run to the conference championship, playing a total of 71 defensive snaps with an overall grade of 74.6 and a run defense grade of 73.9 while allowing two catches for 14 yards with a pass breakup on three targets.
The overall body of work is a bit concerning, with a 102.6 passer rating allowed on 278 targets, but with a projected market value of $6.2 million from Spotrac, McCreary could be a fit to help the Eagles on the outside.
The Eagles are in a good spot as Mitchell has become a shutdown corner, allowing 38 catches for 452 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions and eight pass breakups on 87 targets last season. DeJean has also been solid, allowing 54 catches for 635 yards and a touchdown with two interceptions and 14 pass breakups on 87 targets last season, but DeJean has stated his preference to play on the inside, which leaves the Eagles searching for another CB2.
Adding McCreary could help fill the second outside cornerback spot and still leave room for the Eagles to add competition through a lower-level free agent signing or a pick in April’s draft. It could set McCreary up to find a nice landing spot after presumably being sent out of Los Angeles.
