Surprise Eagles Preseason Cut Lands With NFC Rival in Week 2
By Cem Yolbulan
After Jason Kelce announced his retirement, the Philadelphia Eagles desperately looked for ways to replace him. It was not going to be easy to find a suitable replacement for a 13-year starter who was one of the best ever to play the position.
One option they considered was solving the problem via the draft. With that in mind, they selected Dylan McMahon out of NC State in the sixth round. In the end, they chose to move right guard Cam Jurgens to center to start the season. Even though McMahon had a solid training camp, he surprisingly didn't make the active roster.
However, the Eagles believed in him, so kept him on the practice squad. This obviously carries a risk, especially when you have a talented, young player who played well in the preseason like McMahon. This decision came back to bite Philadelphia as the Los Angeles Rams just signed him to their active roster, according to his agent, Whitney Holtzman.
NFL News: Eagles Draftee Dylan McMahon Signs With the LA Rams
This is a big blow for the Eagles who don't have a backup center on the active roster. GM Howie Roseman tends to value offensive linemen and generally isn't interested in giving away young talent for free. That's what made this decision rather perplexing for the Eagles.
McMahon became the first Eagles draft pick from 2023 and 2024 who is no longer with the team. This gives him an excellent opportunity to establish his career in Los Angeles. The Rams are dealing with a ton of injuries to their offensive line. Steve Avila, Kevin Dotson, and Rob Havenstein -three projected starters- are all questionable to play in Week 2 while starting left tackle Alaric Jackson is suspended for another game.
Signing him off a practice squad means that the Rams must keep McMahon on their active roster for at least four games. Fortunately for him, it looks like he will get a chance in the depleted Rams' offensive line.
