Shocking Eagles Draft Rumor is Clear Howie Roseman Smokescreen
The entire NFL is watching Howie Roseman and the Philadelphia Eagles heading into Thursday's draft. Philly is a major threat to move up in the first round thanks to two second-round picks in its back pocket, and the latest buzz indicates Roseman wants a top-end cornerback prospect.
However, a new rumor that emerged just one day before the draft seems like Roseman's attempt at getting rivals off his scent.
In a draft intel column posted one day before the draft, ESPN's Dan Graziano relayed Philadelphia is looking to trade up -- but for a wide receiver, or even Georgia tight end Brock Bowers.
""People I've talked to believe the #Eagles want to try to move up for a receiver, though one theory I found very interesting and potentially hilarious is that they could move up for tight end Brock Bowers, given their recent predilection for Georgia players.""
- ESPN's Dan Graziano
Now, could the Eagles use a boost at wideout? Sure. A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith are both locked in as the foundational pieces of this unit, but Brown's unhappiness during the 2023 season could always continue and lead to a breakup. Finding a legit WR3 has also been an issue for this squad, so landing one through the draft could provide a long-term solution.
Selecting Bowers would supercharge this offense, and bring back memories of Philadelphia selecting Dallas Goedert while Zach Ertz was still in Pro Bowl form. Nothing sets up a contender for success more than finding stars on rookie-scale contracts to replace high-paid veterans.
All of that being said, trading up for a wide receiver or tight end would be an absolute waste of draft capital. They'd be nothing more than luxury picks, and the Eagles need to be focused on improving their defense after it took a major step back this past season.
That's why the cornerback buzz makes a lot more sense for this squad. However, Roseman likely doesn't want the rest of the league to know his true intentions, so this intel around a WR or Bowers may have "coincidentally" leaked at the same to obscure Philadelphia's actual draft plans.
