The writing has been on the wall all offseason, but that doesn't make the news sting any less. Rhys Hoskins' Philadelphia Phillies career has officially come to an end.

With some late-night breaking news, Hoskins' new deal was announced on Tuesday, seeing him land with another National League contender.

Phillies News: Rhys Hoskins Signs With Brewers

ESPN's Jeff Passan reported on Wednesday that Rhys Hoskins is finalizing a 2-year, $34 million contract with the Milwaukee Brewers.

Philly fans don't want to see him go, at all. But seeing a contract like this makes it clear that it was inevitable. We weren't going to pay him this much, and at the same time it's nice to see that he was still able to get a bag somewhere despite his injury.

The deal features an opt-out after one year, but if Hoskins is playing well enough to opt out it's going to be even harder for Philly to justify spending big to bring him back.

Hoskins ranks No. 16 on the Phillies' all-time home run leaderboard with 148, and just two more would have moved him up into a tie for 14th with Scott Rolen and Mike Lieberthal. His .492 slugging percentage also ranks 15th in Phillies history.

For as much as Hoskins became a fan favorite, he did choose a new team that's going to make it hard to cheer for him too much. The Brewers won the NL Central last season, and while they're not making the moves that some top contenders are, that means they continue to be something of a threat in the National League. Not that the betting markets seem to agree.

Maybe we'll cheer for Hoskins in the regular season, but if we ever see him in October he's going to be just another rival.
