Reed Blankenship Injury Update is Bad News for Eagles Ahead of Sunday Night Football
After losing the New York Jets in Week 6, the Philadelphia Eagles need to bounce back to avoid turning this into a losing skid. That's a tough task in Week 7 though, taking on the high-flying Miami Dolphins on Sunday Night Football.
Stopping the leagues' most productive offense is going to take everything this secondary has, and that looks like it will be a lot more difficult after the latest injury update on safety Reed Blankenship:
Eagles News: Reed Blankenship Injury Update
Reed Blankenship has not practiced all week due to a rib injury suffered in Week 6 against the Jets, and it sounds like he won't practice Friday either. That makes it very unlikely we'll see him take the field on Sunday.
Injury issues have plagued the Eagles' secondary all season, especially at the safety spot.
Blankenship already missed one game earlier this season (Week 2), which saw Terrell Edmunds and Justin Evans man the two safety spots. Evans is now on IR, however, and he's not eligible to return for a few weeks.
That means it'll likely be Edmunds and rookie Sydney Brown starting at safety.
Brown, a third-round rookie out of Illinois, is returning after missing three games with an injury of his own. He's played only 16 defensive snaps on the season, and this is the ultimate trial by fire.
The Dolphins are averaging an NFL-leading 316.8 passing yards per game. That’s over 50 yards per game more than anyone else. The Eagles rank No. 20 in the NFL in passing yards allowed, giving up 232.2 per game.
I'm excited about Brown as a prospect, but I don't have a lot of hope that he's going to be able to fill Blankenship's shoes in coverage here, and that could mean very bad things against Miami.
The best bet for this Philly D will be to get big pressure on Tua Tagovailoa so he doesn't have time to get comfortable and pick apart the depleted secondary.
