When Philadelphia Phillies star shortstop Trea Turner went down with a hamstring injury, many fans and analysts wondered how the team would fare without him at the plate and in the field.

Turner got off to an excellent start this season, slugging .343 at the plate with two home runs and nine RBI. He also created havoc on the basepaths with 10 stolen bases. Nonetheless, the Phillies surprisingly survived without Turner as players such as Edmundo Sosa, Whit Merrifield, and Kody Clemens stepped up.

Philadelphia also increased its lead in the National League from a half-game to eight games and is still one of the best teams in the majors.

The Phillies will wrap up their three-game road series against the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday but received tremendous news about Turner and his availability.

Phillies News: Trea Turner to Return on Monday

Phillies manager Rob Thomson told reporters ahead of Sunday’s series finale that Turner will be activated on Monday, per Matt Gelb of The Athletic. Philly has a six-game homestand, beginning Monday with three against the San Diego Padres.

The 30-year-old infielder hasn’t done any rehab assignments but has been diligently working out with the club. The Phillies will start Sosa at shortstop for Sunday’s game against the O’s, who’s been slashing .279/.342/.519 with five doubles, four triples, four home runs, and 17 RBI in his last 31 games.

When Turner officially returns to the starting lineup on Monday, the Phillies must figure out what they will do with Sosa, who has been outstanding at the plate. Some have suggested that Sosa gets some playing in the outfield, which he hasn’t done much in his career.

The Phillies have the second-best odds to win the National League pennant (+270) on FanDuel Sportsbook behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. But if Turner comes back and picks up where he left off, those odds will quickly shorten.
