With the city connect movement coming to Philly, one uniform needed to be cut from the rotation.

The Philadelphia Phillies organization came into existence all the way back in 1883, making it one of the league's oldest running franchises. Even since its inception, the Phillies have rarely made any changes to their uniforms. Change is coming in 2024, though, as the Phills need to make way for the incoming city connect uniform.

As for what thread would have to leave, that choice was pretty obvious.

Phillies Nation reports that the Phillies will move on from the red tops in the regular season. There is a rule in Major League Baseball, in conjunction with Nike, that each ball club can only have a four uniform rotation, plus their city connect uniform when its debut is made. That debut is coming in 2024 for Philly.

The Phillies currently sport their home white with red pinstripes, road greys, alternate cream throwbacks, alternate powder blue throwbacks, and the alternate red tops in play. One of these had to give way in 2024 as Philadelphia will join the majority of the league by adding their twist to the city connect series. Given the popularity of the other four, the red tops were the obvious choice.

As a traditionalist, thank goodness.

The red tops are meant for spring training and little league baseball. The greys are so clean on the road and such an historical franchise should not succumb to the pressures of these newer franchises wearing all their colors all the time. The throwback creams at home on the weekends are perfect and you don't dare mess with powder blue Thursday's.

I am curious (and a little scared) to see what the city connect uniforms are going to look like, given how weird some of the other teams have gotten with them.

But if one had to go right now, the red tops are it. I'm sure all of Philadelphia will be completely open minded and accepting to change no matter what the new threads look like.
