Latest Nick Sirianni Disaster Proves Eagles Learned Nothing From Week 2 Collapse
By Jovan Alford
Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni was under a lot of pressure and scrutiny after his team lost by one point in Week 2.
The Eagles offense could’ve taken more time off the clock in the fourth quarter and then kicked a field goal after Philadelphia dialed up a passing play to star veteran running back Saquon Barkley, who dropped the ball on third down.
That dropped pass from the star running back gave the Atlanta Falcons new life as they went down the field and scored the game-winning touchdown.
If that was bad enough for Eagles fans, they were in for a treat on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints.
Sirianni made a couple of puzzling decisions late in the first half and early in the second half, which is the perfect microcosm of how the Eagles didn’t learn from their mistakes earlier this week against Atlanta.
Late in the first half with the Eagles in field goal position, Sirianni and offensive coordinator Kellen Moore dialed up an HB pitch to Saquon Barkley off the tush push, which didn’t get nowhere.
The Eagles were at the Saints’ 15-yard line, which would’ve been an easy attempt for standout kicker Jake Elliott. Instead, Sirianni leaned on his aggressiveness, which hurt him in that spot.
According to ESPN’s Benjamin Solak, the NFL’s Next Gen Stats model strongly recommended a field goal attempt for the Eagles with a +8.1 percent win probability to kick.
Then on the Eagles’ first offensive possession in the second half, Sirianni decided to go for it on fourth down instead of kicking the field goal.
Philadelphia called up a passing play on fourth down and short on the Saints’ 34-yard line. Hurts proceeded to get sacked, ending another potential scoring drive.
The Eagles' head coach is known for his aggressive playstyle but it has hurt him multiple times against the Saints, which is confusing, given what happened last week at Lincoln Financial Field.
