The Philadelphia Eagles made a sudden roster move on Thursday, signing WR Griffin Hebert to compete for a depth role while waiving OT Gottlieb Ayedze from the NFI (non-football injury) list.

Originally a 2022 undrafted free agent out of LA Tech, Hebert is an athletic tweener who represents a blend between being an undersized tight end and oversized receiver. He had 23 receptions for 431 yards and three TDs during his final year in college, hoping to utilize his athleticism to land a spot on the roster or practice squad.

He appeared in the preseason last year with the Seattle Seahawks, catching three of four targets for 21 yards before ultimately being cut.

Eagles News: Philadelphia Signs WR Griffin Hebert

Hebert represents a theoretical matchup problem for defenses. At two hundred and forty pounds, he's too big for cornerbacks to handle in coverage, yet too quick for most linebackers. He's not overly strong or an adept blocker, though you could imagine a creative offensive scheme finding space for him to operate.

A four-year contributor for LA Tech, Hebert compiled 99 catches for 1,582 yards and 14 TDs during his time with the program.

It's unlikely Hebert makes the 53-man roster given the Eagles' overall depth at receiver and tight end, but it's easy to imagine him landing on the practice squad and perhaps pushing for a roster spot next season. Philadelphia has several exciting rookies at camp, giving Hebert a chance to shine against his peers over the next few weeks.

Someone who seemed to raise his game against the best opponents, Hebert had 93 receiving yards and a TD against Missouri, 122 receiving yards against Clemson, and 49 yards with a score against South Alabama. The Eagles are no stranger to important games, so Hebert could fit right in.

Creative coaches find ways to get talented players involved. We'll soon see if Hebert can differentiate himself from his competition.
