Eagles Sign All-Pro Linebacker Shaquille Leonard to Bolster Defense
By Joe Summers
The Eagles have officially signed All-Pro linebacker Shaquille Leonard, a massive win for Philadelphia's defense that'll provide a boost to the team's Super Bowl hopes.
Philadelphia was optimistic it would sign Leonard, though fended off rival challengers like the Cowboys to acquire the services of the 2018 Defensive Rookie of the Year.
Despite Sunday's loss to the 49ers, this week has to be considered a win for the Eagles.
Eagles Free Agency News: Philly Signs Shaquille Leonard
Adam Schefter reported the Eagles and Leonard agreed to a one-year deal after he was released by the Cowboys last week.
He battled injuries over the last two seasons, but Leonard made four consecutive All-Pro teams, accumulating at least 121 tackles in each of his first four years in Indianapolis.
The Colts elected to move on, though few players can match Leonard's pedigree over the last half-decade. He was consistently one of the league's best defensive players and should help an Eagles' defense that's been mediocre for most of the season.
We know how good Philadelphia's pass rush is and now the defensive unit adds a player that forced 17 fumbles during that four-year stretch.
For all the concern about the loss to the 49ers, reinforcements were indeed on the way. Leonard is now an Eagle and Philly fans can feel even stronger about their squad's championship hopes.
