Eagles Shockingly Rule Out Key Addition for Season Opener
By Jovan Alford
With the Philadelphia Eagles set to kickoff Week 1 of the regular season on Friday night, we already know of one player who will not be making the trip to Brazil.
According to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, linebacker Devin White will not travel with the team and will miss Friday’s season opener due to an ankle injury. The veteran defender was previously listed as a limited participant on Tuesday’s injury report.
With White not making the trip to South America, the Eagles will likely roll with Nakobe Dean and new addition Zach Baun as their starting linebackers. Baun was signed to a one-year deal in free agency.
As for Dean, McLane also reports that the former third-round pick was slated to be the team’s MIKE linebacker before the team put White on Tuesday’s injury report. He adds that Dean beat out White in training camp.
If you are an Eagles fan, you are excited to see Dean starting as he’s had an up-and-down start to his NFL career. However, it's disappointing that they won’t have White on the field Friday, who has the chance to change the narrative about himself.
White wasn’t viewed as a supreme upgrade for the Eagles at linebacker, but it was better than what they had last year. The former fifth-overall pick left much to be desired in his last year with the Buccaneers and bet on himself by taking a one-year deal with the Eagles.
The Eagles hope the 26-year-old’s ankle injury isn’t a long-term issue as linebacker isn’t one of their strongest position groups.
