The Philadelphia Eagles have arguably the best wide receiver duo in the league with AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith, but in the modern NFL you need more than two good wideouts. And that left wide receiver still a major need on the Eagles' roster with the season approaching.

That need was addressed on Thursday with a shocking last-minute trade with the NFC East Rival Washington Commanders, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Eagles Dotson

Dotson immediately steps in as the Eagles' new WR3, a role that Britain Covey, John Ross, Parris Campbell and rookie Johnny Wilson had been competing for.

The value in the trade is hard not to love. A third-round pick is a pretty low price-tag for a guy who was a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Dotson’s 84 receptions, 1,041 yards and 11 touchdowns across 29 games aren't exactly elite for a first-rounder, but the Washington offense also hasn't been an environment conduscive to success for many wide receivers lately.

If Philly can even unlock a little bit more of his potential, this offense could be borderline unstoppable.

Dotson only carries a $4.1 million cap hit in 2024 and $5.3 million in 2025, and the team will also have the choice of picking up the fifth-year option on his rookie contract in 2026. That type of a bargain contract is exactly what they need to be able to afford talent alongside Brown and Smith after their big contract extensions.

The Eagles offense had already finished No. 7 in the NFL in scoring (433 points) in 2023, and now they've upgraded from D'Andre Swift to Saquon Barkley in the backfield and from a combination of Olamide Zaccheaus and Julio Jones to Jahan Dotson at WR3.

This move not only gives Philly an instant upgrade on offense, but it's also one that helps solidify the long-term outlook of this offense — something Howie Roseman has done masterfully all offseason.
