The Philadelphia Eagles did a great job escaping the injury bug in their preseason opener against the Baltimore Ravens last week.

Unfortunately, the Eagles didn’t have the same luck in their second preseason contest Thursday night against the New England Patriots. Second-year offensive lineman Tyler Steen suffered an ankle injury in the second quarter.

The young offensive lineman was down momentarily on the field but able to walk off the field on his own, per Zach Berman of PHLY. However, John Clark of NBC Sports Philadelphia reported that Steen was seen going to the locker room on a cart.

Steen has been battling through a “mild ankle injury” in training camp, which hasn’t helped him in the competition for the starting right guard spot. With Cam Jurgens moving from right guard to center as Jason Kelce's replacement, the Eagles hoped for Steen to take that next step and win the job this summer.

However, with the former third-round pick hindered by the ankle injury, the door was left wide open for veteran offensive lineman Mekhi Becton to take the job. Becton has received a lot of reps at right guard throughout camp and is the frontrunner to be the starter to kick off Week 1.

The Eagles will hold out Steen for the rest of Thursday’s preseason game against New England and hope to have the young offensive lineman ready to go for the final preseason contest next week against the Minnesota Vikings.
