Eagles' Failed Trade Attempt Leads to Quinyon Mitchell Selection
By Joe Summers
The Philadelphia Eagles officially selected Toledo CB Quinyon Mitchell with their first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, taking perhaps the class' best defensive back at pick No. 22.
While Eagles fans should be thrilled about the selection, GM Howie Roseman reportedly failed in an attempt to trade up prior to the pick. All's well that ended well, but Philadelphia nearly fell short of its goal.
Nonetheless, Mitchell represents a slam-dunk first-round pick and immediately improves the Eagles' biggest weakness.
Eagles News: Philadelphia Drafts CB Quinyon Mitchell in First Round
It's unclear whether Mitchell was the Eagles' primary target, as Philadelphia reportedly tried to move ahead of Pittsburgh at pick No. 20. The Steelers ultimately selected Washington OT Troy Fautanu, paving the way for Roseman to take Mitchell.
This is the first time the Eagles took a defensive back in the first round since 2002, and many considered Mitchell to be a potential top-15 pick. By any measure, this should be considered a win for a defense that needed an injection of youth, enthusiasm and energy.
Opposing quarterbacks had a pathetic 49.0 passer rating when targeting Mitchell this year over 781 snaps, and he should immediately become one of the more fearsome cornerbacks in the division.
With A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith locked up, Mitchell will get plenty of tests in practice. If the Eagles are going to return to the Super Bowl, this is the exact kind of draft pick fans should hope to see.
We'll see what comes of the next few rounds, but this is a big win on the draft's first night.
