Eagles' Devin White Drama Somehow Gets Even Worse Before Week 2 Game
By Jovan Alford
A couple of days before the Philadelphia Eagles’ regular-season opener against the Green Bay Packers, fans were shocked to learn that veteran linebacker Devin White did not travel to the team to Brazil due to an ankle injury.
The Eagles signed White in the offseason to a one-year prove-it deal after he spent the first five years of his career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. White’s addition to the LB room seemed like a perfect fit on paper, given Philly’s issues at the position over the last few years.
Nonetheless, it appears that White’s debut will have to wait for another week. According to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the veteran linebacker won’t be active for tonight’s game against the Atlanta Falcons.
McLane adds the 26-year-old White is healthy, but was beaten out for the starting MIKE LB job by Nakobe Dean. Dean played well in the Eagles’ Week 1 win over Green Bay, playing next to Zach Baun.
Dean had four combined tackles, two tackles for loss, and a pass deflection. He also held his own in pass coverage, with a 50% completion percentage allowed on targets.
Last week, Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio told reporters that Dean is the starter when asked if the young linebacker did enough against Green Bay, even if White was healthy.
The Eagles hope Dean and Baun can stay healthy and build off the momentum they created in Week 1. However, for fans of White, this isn’t a good look as he was a former first-round pick in 2019.
