Eagles Cut Defensive Starter in Salary Cap Roster Dump
By Jovan Alford
The Philadelphia Eagles are in the process of rebuilding their secondary after a poor 2023 performance.
The Eagles released veteran safety Kevin Byard last week, whom they acquired from the Tennessee Titans before the trade deadline. However, Byard isn’t the only member of the secondary that won’t be in Philadelphia next season.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Wednesday that the Eagles are releasing veteran cornerback Avonte Maddox, who had a cap hit of $9.6 million in 2024. Schefter adds that Philly and Maddox will continue talking and are open to reuniting.
Nevertheless, it’s not shocking to see Philadelphia release Maddox as they prioritize cap space this offseason. With Maddox off the books, the Eagles save $2 million, which doesn’t seem like a lot in the grand scheme of things.
However, it’s tough to have a high cap hit for a player who has only played in 13 out of a possible 34 games over the last two years. Maddox played in four games this past season as he missed significant time with a torn pectoral that he suffered in Week 2.
The veteran defensive back posted 12 combined tackles, two pass deflections, and a tackle for loss. Maddox also had an 83.3 completion percentage allowed on targets and a 113.4 pass rating allowed when targeted.
If Maddox and the Eagles cannot find common ground on a new contract, Philadelphia could throw Isaiah Rodgers in the slot, who didn’t play last season after being suspended for violating the NFL’s gambling policy.
