Eagles Appear to Rule Out Rashaad Penny Reunion With Latest Decision
The Philadelphia Eagles' running back room has undergone a complete overhaul after the 2023 season. D'Andre Swift has been replaced by Saquon Barkley, while free agents Rashaad Penny and Boston Scott were not re-signed.
The team just used a fourth-round pick on Clemson RB Will Shipley as well, signaling a new direction for the Eagles' depth at the position.
Scott recently found a new home in Los Angeles, but Penny remains unsigned in free agency. While he's likely to latch on with some team for the 2024 campaign, don't expect it to be Philly.
After it was rumored earlier in the offseason, the Eagles have confirmed cornerback Eli Ricks is officially changing from No. 39 to No. 23 this year. That, of course, was the number Penny donned in 2023.
Now this doesn't clearly rule out anything, but this is just another sign Penny won't be returning. Philadelphia has shown zero reported interest in bringing him back, allowing him to pursue other options in free agency. He hasn't garnered much outside buzz, though he did visit with his old team, the Seattle Seahawks, before the draft.
Considering Penny was a regular inactive for the Eagles and managed to suit up in just three contests despite being healthy, it's no wonder Nick Sirianni is content to move on. The selection of Shipley, plus the futures signing of young running back Tyron Davis-Price, gives Sirianni new depth options to test over Scott and Penny.
At this rate, Penny may have to wait for a training camp injury before signing with a new squad.
