Round 5, Pick 3: Jaylin Simpson, S, Auburn

Back on the clock for a third time in Round 5, the Eagles again address their secondary concerns. This time, it’s Auburn safety Jaylin Simpson who gets the call.

Simpson had a fantastic final campaign with Auburn, recording 87 tackles and four interceptions. He’s solid in coverage and has the speed and instincts to patrol deep in the secondary. He also has experience playing cornerback and could be an option in the slot.

Philadelphia was awful against the pass all year which will be a major focus for Vic Fangio. They’re going to need to throw a lot of darts at the board to ensure they improve and adding Simpson could wind up being a steal.

Round 7: Tim Smith, DT, Alabama

Philadelphia has a lot invested in the interior of their defensive line with both Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis being selected in Round 1 out of Georgia recently. They also still had Fletcher Cox but he enters free agency and there are reports he could decide to retire.

If so, the Eagles will be in decent shape with Carter, Davis, and Milton Williams as their top defensive tackles. Still, they’d be wise to add another backup and they find a quality option in Round 7 with Tim Smith.

The Alabama product stands 6-4 and 320 pounds and is hard for offensive linemen to move. He finished his career with 90 tackles and had 11.5 of those go for a loss. He’s not going to offer much as a pass rusher but still had 4.5 sacks during his time with Alabama.
