Eagles-49ers Opening Odds are Wildly Disrespectful to Philly in Week 13

The 10-1 Eagles get a slap in the face from sportsbooks with their Week 13 odds as they host the 49ers.

The Philadelphia Eagles are the reigning NFC champions. They have the best 2023 record not only in the NFC, but in the entire NFL. They have home-field advantage for Sunday's Week 13 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers.

But the Eagles are getting no love in the betting market, leaving fans in Philly feeling totally disrespected.

Eagles vs 49ers Odds: Philadelphia Gets Disrespected in Week 13

The Eagles have opened as 2.5-point underdogs on the spread against the 49ers, with +116 moneyline odds in a game with a 46.5-point over/under.

Even if this game were being played at a neutral site, Eagles fans have gotta feel like their team should be favored. But looking at a 2.5-point spread while playing at the Linc? That's wild. Home-field advantage is usually worth 2-3 points on a spread, which means this line is suggesting that the 49ers are better than the Eagles by more than a field goal.

What this line screams to me is that the markets are putting a lot more weight into some of the teams' statistical rankings than their win-loss records.

The 49ers do, admittedly, outshine the Eagles in a lot of stats, including a few key ones:

  • Average point differential: 49ers 2nd (+12.7), Eagles 7th (+5.8)
  • Yards per play (offense): 49ers 2nd (6.5), Eagles 10th (5.4)
  • Yards per play (defense): 49ers 5th (4.8), Eagles 14th (5.2)

Pro Football Focus also has the 49ers' graded out as their top-ranked team, both on offense and defense. They have the Eagles at just No. 7 overall, including 7th on offense and 9th on defense.

So really, this game is about to be the ultimate test in the NFC. Stats and grades only tell us so much when both teams have played wildly different schedules all season.

Week 13 will tell us whether the 49ers are really the best squad in the NFL despite their inferior record, or whether the Eagles' win-loss record should hold more weight than the stats San Francisco leads in.
