9. Michael Lorenzen

Trading for Michael Lorenzen looked like it was going to be the steal of the trade deadline. Heck, maybe the steal of the decade. Dave Dombrowski was a genius, and the Phillies’ parade was being scheduled.

And then came mid-August. After his 17 scoreless innings, including the no-hitter against the Nationals, Lorenzen got shelled for 6 earned runs in his third start. Then 4 more. Then 4 more. Then 7 more. Then 4 more. And then he was taken out of the rotation and gave up another 4 earned runs in his first relief appearance.

He was admittedly fine in his two short postseason appearances, allowing 2 hits and 2 walks with no earned runs in 2.2 innings, but that doesn’t make up for the disaster of a regular season.

Lorenzen will have no trouble finding a suitor willing to roll the dice on putting him back in the rotation, and he's going to get a decent contract out of it. The Phillies just shouldn't be the team to take that risk.
