5. Dylan Covey

The Los Angeles Dodgers waived Dylan Covey after one poor performance this season, and the Phillies decided to give him a shot too.

And why not? Covey washed out of the MLB the first time, but he looked pretty good with the Rakuten Monkeys in the CPBL, so it was interesting to kick the tires on the 32-year old.

And admittedly, the experiment could've gone worse.

Covey ate up innings out of the pen pretty well, pitching 43.0 innings across 28 appearances and finishing with a 3.69 ERA. That blew away his previous career best.

But even a cursory glance at the advanced stats showed that we got the same ol’ Covey, just that he brought a little better luck back with him from Taiwan.

Whichever ERA-predictive metric you like, they all send a pretty similar message. A 4.90 xERA, 4.70 FIP, 4.42 xFIP and 4.45 SIERA all point to his play being a lot closer to his career average than to actually being as good as his sub-4 ERA would suggest.

At this point you just quit while you're ahead. That luck will run out eventually, and you don't want to be the one left holding the bag when it does.
