4. Edmundo Sosa

The Phillies avoided arbitration with Edmundo Sosa last January, and now he's up again after playing the year on a $950K salary in 2023.

Sosa’s offense took a bit of a step forward this season, which was admittedly nice to see from the 27-year-old. His .251 average was the second-highest of his career and his .427 slugging percentage was easily a career high.

He’s still not a real factor from the dish though, and that’s not what you have him in the lineup before.

Defense is what has made Sosa a valuable contributor in the past, and he took a big step back in that area in 2023. It can be hard to nail defense down with any stats, but FanGraphs’ defensive rating stat saw him go from 6.5 in 2021 and 7.0 in 2022 down sharply to 1.7 in 2023. His .946 fielding percentage also ranked just 232 out of 234 players who played 500+ innings on the year.

You can’t hit for a .309 weighted on-base average (wOBA) and be one of the worst fielders in the majors.

Even if Sosa will play on a really low-dollar contract, it simply may not be worth spending a roster space to keep Sosa around.
