4 76ers Playing Their Last Season in Philadelphia This Year
3. P.J. Tucker
The 2023-24 NBA season will be the 13th of P.J. Tucker's career, but it could also be his last in Philly.
Tucker's three-year, $33.2 million contract has been an albatross around the 76ers' neck ever since he signed it in 2022. Many fans had an issue with it at the time considering that the Raleigh, NC native was 37 when he signed the multi-year deal.
Unsurprisingly, Tucker didn't live up to his price tag last year. While offense has never been his strong suit, his 3.5 PPG clip on 42.7% shooting was more than underwhelming. His defensive numbers were also down, highlighted by a career-low 1.0 steals and 0.4 blocks per 100 possessions.
Tucker hitting free agency next summer means that the 76ers don't need to move on from him immediately, however, I wouldn't be surprised if they did. After all, Hoops Hype's Michael Scotto reported back in July that Tucker could also be traded to the Clippers if that's where Harden winds up heading.
There just isn't a good reason to justify Tucker's salary or spot on the team. Chances are that the 76ers can find someone young, better, and cheaper to fill his role whether that's this season or next.
