76ers Get Worrying Joel Embiid Injury Update
By Tyler Maher
After a drama-filled offseason, the Philadelphia 76ers' regular season has mostly gone off without a hitch. The Sixers enter Wednesday's action tied with the Milwaukee Bucks for the second-best record in the Eastern Conference at 10-4, putting them just one game behind the Boston Celtics.
Unfortunately for Philadelphia, the team received a concerning injury update prior to Wednesday night's game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Joel Embiid Injury Update
NBA insider Shams Charania reported on Wednesday afternoon that Joel Embiid will miss Wednesday's game due to left hip soreness.
This will be Embiid's first absence of the season, and it comes at a tough time. The Timberwolves have the best record in the Western Conference at 10-3 and also feature two of the best big men in the league in Karl-Anthony Towns and Rudy Gobert. Without Embiid protecting the paint, the Sixers are in major trouble tonight.
The defending NBA MVP hasn't been the most durable player throughout his career, so it's always concerning when he misses time. Embiid has yet to play 70 games in a season in his career, although he's on pace to do so this year.
Philly fans are hoping that the team is just giving Embiid a night off here. He just played 41 minutes in Tuesday's overtime loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, so it's a good time to give him some rest. Perhaps he's feeling a bit sore today after logging such a heavy workload last night, but he looked like himself on the court and turned in another stellar performance with 32 points, 13 rebounds and 5 blocks.
Time will tell if this is just a routine maintenance day for Embiid or if he truly is dealing with an injury. Given how early it is in the season, however, there's no need to push him.
