6 Free Agents the Eagles Should Sign Before Mandatory Minicamp
3. Justin Simmons, safety
Is the whole thing with Justin Simmons being a free agent approaching the month of June a joke? Is the entire NFL collaborating on some kind of prank?
What reasons could there be for Simmons to be unsigned at this stage of the offseason? The Denver Broncos cut Simmons before the start of 2024 NFL free agency to give him a leg up in the loaded safety market, and it was assumed by many that Simmons would get scooped up quickly by some other team looking for an elite safety.
That hasn't been the case.
Whether teams are turned off by the price or the fact that Simmons is 30 going on 31 this season, it's hard to understand no matter what way you slice it.
Since entering the league in 2016, no player has had more interceptions than Simmons (30). He's been a turnover machine since he first stepped foot onto an NFL field, and he's one of the best assets you could possibly ask for in a locker room. Even at this stage of the offseason, Simmons would bring captainship into the mix for an NFL team, and he would take a good defense and make it great.
He could legitimately be the missing piece for a possible contender. Why would the Eagles not sign Simmons? He played his college ball at Boston College so he's already been an Eagle before. He played for Vic Fangio in Denver and more importantly, the Eagles just hired Simmons' old defensive backs coach -- Christian Parker.
There are connections there, and with all due respect to Reed Blankenship, Justin Simmons would be an upgrade.
