6 Eagles Playing for Their Jobs in Training Camp
By Randy Gurzi
The Philadelphia Eagles will report to training camp on July 23 and the goal is simple — they believe they’re Super Bowl contenders.
They know they had the talent to win it all last year and they were 10-1 after 11 games. Things fell apart after that but head coach Nick Sirianni believes the issues have been solved by making a change at offensive and defensive coordinator.
The changes won’t stop there, however. Philadelphia will have a competitive camp with several spots up for grabs. With that being the case, here are six Eagles who will be fighting for their jobs this summer.
6. Tyler Steen, Guard
Cam Jurgens started 11 games at right guard in 2023 but will slide inside to replace Jason Kelce. The long-time starting center decided to retire this offseason but the Eagles were ready with Jurgens, a second-round pick in 2022.
Right now, Tyler Steen is penciled in as the replacement for Jurgens at right guard. As a rookie, the third-round pick played in 11 games with one start. He graded low in pass protection which needs to improve if he wants to keep his job.
Philadelphia does have a couple of option on the bench with the experience. One is Matt Hennessy who started 22 games at center for the Atlanta Falcons but can play guard as well. They’re also experimenting with Mekhi Becton inside. He was a draft bust at left tackle for the New York Jets but could find new life as a guard.
Steen remains their top choice but he has to prove he can handle the job.
