6 Eagles Who Could Be Cut Before Playing a Snap
By Randy Gurzi
1. Parris Campbell, Wide Receiver
When the Eagles signed Parris Campbell this offseason, it was a shrewd move.
Campbell was a second-round pick out of Ohio State in 2019 and spent four years with the Indianapolis Colts. His time in Indy was marred by injuries as he played in just 15 games through the first three seasons he was in the NFL.
A broken foot in 2019 cost him time and then a knee injury in 2020 sidelined him once again — and cost him a chunk of the 2021 campaign as well.
Finally healthy in 2022, Campbell had his best season as a pro. He appeared in all 17 games for the Colts and was their primary slot receiver. He had 63 receptions for 623 yards and three touchdowns. This led to the New York Giants giving him a shot in 2023 as a free-agent addition.
Campbell wasn't a major factor there, gaining just 104 yards on 20 receptions with no touchdowns. The 5.2 yards per reception average was alarming but the Eagles signed him hoping the issues were on Daniel Jones and not Campbell.
There was a role for Campbell as WR3 behind A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. The problem is they might have landed a superior option on Day 3 of the draft. Ainias Smith from Texas A&M is a talented slot receiver who could push Campbell. If that wasn't enough, even the massive Johnny Wilson (6-foot-6, 238 pounds) was a success in the slot for Florida State.
The Eagles struggled with receiver depth behind Brown and DeVonta Smith in 2023. That won't be the case this season which is good for them but not for Campbell — who could be on the outside looking in when cuts are announced.
