5 Phillies on Thin Ice This Offseason

The Phillies need to make some changes in order to make the leap and win a World Series, and that puts these guys on thin ice.

5. Jake Cave

The Phillies claimed Cave off waivers last offseason, but they probably wish they hadn't. He endured his fourth straight subpar season at the plate, slashing .212/.272/.348 with more strikeouts (55) than hits (39) in 65 games.

Those numbers are bad for any position, but they are especially damaging given that he plays offense-first positions like outfield, first base and DH. You need to have a decent bat at those spots, and it's not like Cave is compensating with outstanding speed or defense, either.

Even worse, Cave capped his terrible season by making the last out of the NLCS, sealing Philadelphia's fate. It was surprising that he was even on the postseason roster in the first place, and he didn't play at all in the first two rounds of the playoffs.

Cave turns 31 in December and hasn't had a productive season since 2019. There's absolutely no good reason for the Phillies to bring him back and waste a roster spot on him next year, so consider him as good as gone.

In the meantime, you can pivot to betting on the Eagles, Sixers and Flyers at FanDuel Sportsbook. New users who sign up through the link below can snag $150 in bonus bets if their first moneyline wager of just $5 wins. This amazing deal won't be around long, though, so claim it today!
